Week 7 Term 1 - English Department: Goals for 2026 (March 09 - March 13)

Having clear goals for the English Department is vital because they serve as a compass, ensuring every member is working toward the same ultimate student success outcomes.  Ultimately, defined goals keep the team accountable, focused, and motivated by a shared vision.

COLLABORATION

The English Department's primary goals for 2026 are centered on deepening internal collaboration and establishing  units of learning for every text and assessment taught. This initiative is crucial because greater collaboration ensures consistency in teaching standards, shared best practices across the department, and a more equitable and cohesive student experience regardless of the teacher. By creating detailed, standardized units of learning, the department guarantees that curriculum goals, essential skills, and assessment criteria are explicitly mapped out and aligned, leading to clearer instructional focus, better tracking of student progress, and ultimately, improved student outcomes and mastery of literary and analytical concepts.

CREATING YOUR OWN NARRATIVE

A key focus for the English Department in 2026 is the empowerment of our students to become active authors in crafting and creating their own narratives. This objective is profoundly important for both educators and learners. For students, it shifts their role from passive consumers of literature to creators, fostering critical thinking, agency, and a deeper understanding of how narrative structures shape reality and identity. By giving them the tools to define their own stories, we validate their experiences and equip them with a voice vital for academic success and civic engagement. For teachers, this goal transforms the classroom into a space for authentic inquiry and mentorship, moving beyond standardized interpretation to focus on the process of composition, rhetorical power, and intellectual risk-taking, which ultimately revitalizes the curriculum and strengthens the student-teacher relationship.

LITERACY JOURNEY

The Department's commitment to providing rich literacy strategies is a core focus for nurturing every student's reading and writing journey. This emphasis is critical because literacy is not a single skill but a multifaceted tool that unlocks access to all other subjects and ideas. By implementing diverse and explicit strategies—such as close reading techniques, rhetorical analysis frameworks, and process-based writing models—teachers can systematically equip students to decode complex texts and compose sophisticated arguments. This approach builds confidence, moves students beyond surface-level comprehension, and ensures they develop the transferable skills necessary to become lifelong critical thinkers, effective communicators, and informed citizens in an increasingly text-heavy world.
